The harmoniously balanced life of the great householder-guru became the inspiration of thousands of men and women.
— Paramahansa Yogananda
Lahiri Mahasaya, the paramguru of Paramahansa Yogananda, is revered by all YSS/SRF devotees as a Yogavatar (“incarnation of Yoga”) who was pivotal in introducing Kriya Yoga to the modern world. Born on September 30, 1828, Lahiri Mahasaya left this world on September 26, 1895, during his mahasamadhi — the last meditation, or conscious communion with God, during which a perfected master merges himself in the cosmic Aum and casts off the physical body.
YSS sannyasis will lead two special online meditations to honour Lahiri Mahasaya’s mahasamadhi and avirbhav anniversaries in September 2026:
- Saturday, September 26: Lahiri Mahasaya Mahasamadhi Commemorative Meditation
- Wednesday, September 30: Lahiri Mahasaya Avirbhav Commemorative Meditation
