About the Event

Unknown to society in general, a great spiritual renaissance started in 1861 in a remote corner of Banaras. As the fragrance of flowers cannot be suppressed, so Lahiri Mahasaya, quietly living as an ideal householder, could not hide his innate glory. Devotee-bees from every part of India began to seek the divine nectar of the liberated master…

— Paramahansa Yogananda in Autobiography of a Yogi

Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya is the paramguru of Paramahansa Yogananda and is revered as a Yogavatar, or “incarnation of Yoga.”

Lahiri Mahasaya was chosen by his guru, Mahavatar Babaji to begin the spread of Kriya Yoga, and Babaji blessed Paramahansa Yogananda to carry it worldwide. September 30 marks Lahiri Mahasayaji’s Avirbhav Divas or birth anniversary.

A special online commemorative meditation was conducted by a YSS sannyasi on September 30, to honour the life of this Yogavatar, Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya, on his Avirbhav Divas. This commemorative meditation began with an opening prayer and a reading, followed by chanting and a period of meditation. The programme concluded with Paramahansa Yogananda’s healing technique and a closing prayer.

YSS ashrams, kendras, and mandalis also held in-person commemorations to celebrate this special day.
