Meditate unceasingly, that you quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. Cease being a prisoner of the body; using the secret key of Kriya, learn to escape into spirit.
— Lahiri Mahasaya as quoted in Autobiography of a Yogi
Sri Sri Lahiri Mahasaya was the harbinger of Kriya Yoga for spiritually thirsty souls in modern times. He is revered as the Yogavatar, ”Incarnation of Yoga,” by YSS/SRF devotees around the world. Being a householder and yet achieving the highest level of spiritual realization, he exemplified that a man can fulfil his worldly responsibilities and still follow the path of self-realization.
Lahiri Mahasaya left his mortal form and entered Mahasamadhi, a God-realized yogi’s final conscious exit from the body, on September 26, 1895. To commemorate this day, an online meditation was led by a YSS sannyasi on Friday, September 26.
This programme included an opening prayer, inspirational reading followed by chanting, and a period of meditation, and concluded with Paramahansa Yogananda’s healing technique and a closing prayer.
On this special occasion various ashrams, kendras and mandalis also conducted in-person events for devotees.
