Patiently, month after month, year after year, I have watched over you, waiting for this perfect day. Now you are with me! Here is your cave, loved of yore; I have kept it ever clean and ready for you.
— Mahavatar Babaji to Lahiri Mahasaya in Autobiography of a Yogi
In 1861, in a small cave in the lap of the scenic Dunagiri mountains, nestled in the Kumaon region of the Himalayas, a celestial event took place that marked a turning point in the spiritual history of the modern age. Mahavatar Babaji, the great deathless yogi and immortal Guru, initiated his exalted disciple, Lahiri Mahasaya, into the ancient science of Kriya Yoga in this sacred cave, reviving an age-old technique of Self-realization for the upliftment of human consciousness.
The blessings of Mahavatar Babaji and his beloved disciple, Lahiri Mahasaya, still permeate this holy cave and the surrounding area. All Kriya Yogis trace their lineage to this event.

A Place of Pilgrimage for Truth-Seekers
The sacred site of Mahavatar Babaji’s Cave has become a beacon for truth-seekers around the world.
Near the cave, YSS has also established a small shrine, Smriti Bhavan, in honour of Mahavatar Babaji. It serves as a place of remembrance and meditation for devotees visiting this sacred pilgrimage site.
For many visitors, these pilgrimages are an opportunity to learn more about Mahavatar Babaji and the ancient science of Kriya Yoga, whose modern revival and worldwide dissemination were guided by this great guru through Paramahansa Yogananda and the line of YSS/SRF gurus.
Visits by Distinguished Persons and Dignitaries
As more and more people come to know of Mahavatar Babaji through our beloved Gurudeva’s Autobiography of a Yogi, the internet and online media, a growing number of visitors — at times arriving by the busload — and among them distinguished persons and dignitaries, make the pilgrimage to these sacred sites to receive the blessings of the great immortal master.
