YSS Pune Retreat

Welcome to ‘Yogoda Satsanga Sarovar Sadhanalaya’, the Pune Retreat of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS). Embraced by the picturesque Sahyadri hills, beside the serene backwaters of the Khadkwasla Dam Lake, this retreat centre lies on the outskirts of the city of Pune – a thriving hub of culture, education, technology, and spirituality in western India.

Far from the commotion and demands of everyday life, the retreat offers a sacred refuge for devotees to withdraw from worldly preoccupations, rejuvenate themselves, and deepen their communion with the Divine. On the auspicious occasion of the Sadhanalaya’s inauguration in December 2003, Sri Daya Mata, the late third president and sanghamata of YSS/SRF, conveyed her joy and blessings for devotees through a special message, a section from which has been shared below:

In today’s busy world, it is very beneficial to get away for a few days occasionally, and use that time to intensify one’s sadhana. This beautiful retreat, which has been made possible by God’s grace and your efforts, gives you that blessed opportunity. I urge you all to make the best use of it and fill this “hive” with the “honey” of divine joy that can only be found in the silent depths of meditation and spiritual living.

— Sri Sri Daya Mata

Serene and Scenic Environment

Cradled by sweeping hillscapes and tranquil waters, the Sadhanalaya rests in a secluded setting where one can feel the calming presence of God. Thoughtfully laid out to preserve the site’s natural verdure, the grounds abound in diverse flowers, fruit trees (including a litchi tree grown from a sapling of the sacred litchi tree at the Ranchi Ashram), and medicinal plants, forming graceful pathways and shaded spaces for meditation.

The retreat’s peaceful ambience is further enriched by the fauna – with sparrows, kingfishers, and peacocks adding life and colour to the serene surroundings. Devotees can enjoy the beautiful sunrise and sunset along with the changing hues of the sky against the backdrop of the surrounding hills and backwaters. At night, the star-filled skies evoke a sense of wonder and invite moments of stillness and introspection.

Retreat Facilities

The Sadhanalaya houses a dedicated meditation hall featuring glass doors, windows, and overhead panels that allow natural ventilation and help retreatants feel an uninterrupted connection with the great outdoors. The adjoining guest house has 9 accommodation rooms, each with comfortable bedding, attached bathrooms with hot water facilities, and balconies offering varied views of the surrounding landscape. The retreat’s kitchen and adjacent covered dining area serve nutritious, sattvic meals to retreatants in a simple and harmonious setting.

Additional facilities include a reception office, a mobile deposit area, and a library with YSS publications. Spacious lawns with benches provide an ideal space for devotees to practise the Energization Exercises, engage in quiet reflection, sit in spiritual study and meditation, or simply enjoy the fresh air. Parking space for 20-30 vehicles is also available within and around the premises.

Overview of Events

The Sadhanalaya hosts a theme-based retreat on the last weekend of each month, offering devotees a structured opportunity to deepen their sadhana. The programme typically includes group meditations, discourses, readings from YSS publications, video shows, bhajans, and periods of fellowship — allowing participants to withdraw from daily routines and immerse themselves more fully in spiritual practice.

In addition to these conducted retreats, the centre remains open throughout the year for individual (personal) retreats with prior registration. As available, selected programmes — such as live-streamed satsangas and special events from other YSS ashrams — are also hosted at the Sadhanalaya. While the retreat does not maintain a schedule of regular weekly events, occasional special observances and monastic visits take place, adding to the sanctity and inspiration of the centre.

General Retreat Guidelines

To foster an environment conducive to sadhana and also to make the most out of the retreat, individuals are encouraged to observe silence as much as possible. For a truly secluded retreat experience, devotees may choose to deposit their mobile phones upon arrival and may collect them at the time of departure. The Sadhanalaya phone numbers are available round the clock to receive emergency messages on behalf of the retreatants.

Please note the following points to make your retreat more rewarding and successful:

  • Participate in the full retreat programme (to the extent possible) and not engage in other activities during the time of your stay.
  • Ensure participation in group activities as they bring you into the company of other like-minded souls thereby reinforcing your good efforts and aspirations.
  • Refrain from reading secular literature such as newspapers and magazines during your retreat, should you have brought any with you.
  • Practise the presence of God. Learn to feel that God is by your side every moment, in every experience.
  • Last but not the least, we urge you to meditate deeply during your retreat. Meditation is the very foundation of your relationship with God.

Gurudeva’s retreats are open to all, regardless of an individual’s ability to contribute financially. However, we are very grateful to those who are able to make larger contributions that allow us to defray the costs of meals, lodging, maintenance, and upkeep of the retreat facility, thereby extending Gurudeva’s hospitality to all sincere seekers.

How to Reach

The Sadhanalaya’s location on Panshet Road near Khanapur Village, about 30 km from central Pune, offers the serenity of the countryside with the convenience of being just about an hour’s drive away from the city centre. With Pune being well connected to major parts of the country through air, rail, and road, there are a variety of options for you to choose from to reach the Sadhanalaya.

By Air

The nearest airport is Pune International Airport (PNQ) at Lohegaon, about 38 kilometres from the Sadhanalaya. Upon your arrival at the airport, you can conveniently hire a taxi for the onward journey to the Sadhanalaya, which takes approximately 2 hours.

The Pune International Airport is well-connected with all major cities in India through regular domestic flights. However, in case a direct flight to Pune is not available from your city, you may take a flight to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), Mumbai, which offers wider domestic and international connectivity. From here, you can hire a direct cab which takes about 4-5 hours to reach the Sadhanalaya.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Pune Junction (PUNE), a primary railhead situated on two major lines of the Indian Railways network: the Mumbai–Chennai line and the Pune–Miraj line, in the Central Railway zone, ensuring good connectivity with all major cities across India.

If a direct train to Pune Junction is not available from your city, you may consider travelling to Mumbai first, which is one of India’s largest rail hubs and offers far wider connectivity from all parts of the country. Major railway stations in Mumbai, such as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Mumbai Central, Bandra Terminus, Dadar, and Thane, are well served by long-distance trains from across India. From any of these stations, frequent express and intercity trains, as well as road transport options, are readily available to reach Pune.

Upon your arrival at the Pune Railway Station, taxis, as well as local city buses from the nearby bus station, are conveniently available for onward travel to the Sadhanalaya; the journey by road takes about an hour, depending on traffic.

By Road

Intercity:
Pune is well-connected by road and lies on NH-48, a major highway linking Mumbai, Bengaluru, and western and southern India. Regular interstate and intercity bus services operate from major towns and cities to Pune’s central bus terminals, such as Swargate and Shivajinagar. Taxis and private cab services can also be easily availed from nearby cities.

Within Pune:

  • From Pune city, proceed towards Sinhagad Road and continue in the direction of Khadakwasla Dam.
  • From there, take Panshet Road toward Panshet Dam and continue past Donje Phata and Khanapur village.
  • The retreat gate lies near the 12-kilometre milestone toward Panshet, opposite to the prominent ‘Nanda Mahal’ complex gate.

Modes of Public Transport:

  • Taxis and app-based cabs like Ola and Uber are readily available for travel up to the retreat centre.
  • To travel by bus, head to Swargate Bus Stand (four kilometres from the railway station) and board any bus bound to Panshet or Khanapur and conveniently alight at the gate of the retreat centre, which is located en route and takes about an hour to reach by road.

Please note:
For the sake of convenience, devotees visiting for the first time are advised to arrive during regular office hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
